Last weekend, your Fairmont Prep debate team competed in tournaments concurrently. Locally, we debated at the Orange County Speech League (OCSL) Spring Invitational. Away, we competed at the Golden Desert Debate Tournament in Las Vegas. In total, 27 competitors from Fairmont Prep participated last weekend.

In Las Vegas, eight Fairmont Prep students competed at a tournament that awards gold bids for the April Tournament of Champions (TOC) to the top eight teams. In total, 85 teams from around the western United States debated to earn those coveted bids.

The Fairmont Prep team of sophomores Adam Alamy and Olivia Bobrownicki advanced to elimination rounds after earning a record of five wins and one loss in preliminary seeding rounds. They ended their run in the top 32 after a very close 2-1 decision and placed 24th in overall competition. The team of seniors Gurveer Singh and Adnan Ismail tore through their competition, winning eight of their 10 debates, and ending the tournament taking third place in the semifinals! This performance secured them their first gold bid as a team and the sixth bid of the year for Fairmont Prep. Singh was also individually recognized as the second best speaker out of the 170 competitors. Overall, in Las Vegas, Fairmont Prep took home 26 winning ballots and only gave up 13 losses.

Closer to home at the Orange County Speech League Spring Invitational, Fairmont Prep secured four out of the top six spots in Varsity Public Forum. The team of freshmen Harishri and Hitakshi Savdharia (3-0) notched second place; sophomores Ryan Idnani and Andrew Lewis (3-0) took fourth; freshmen Sophia Jansen and Ved Shivade (2-1) captured fifth place; and the team of freshman Jennifer Cresap and sophomore Matthew Ong (2-1) finished in sixth. Junior Arpna Ghanshani placed second in overall competition in International Extemporaneous Speaking.
