Debate Team Wins Trophies in Long Beach

Last week, your Fairmont Prep debate team competed in the National Debate Invitational at CSU Long Beach, which comprised more than 1,400 competitors from all over the country. Eight teams competed in Public Forum Debate, eight debaters competed in Congressional Debate, and junior Arpna Ghanshani competed in Extemporaneous Speaking. The students debated a wide range of topics, including the Korean crisis, the bail system in America, regulation of aerial drones, and tax reform.

The Varsity Public Forum field comprised 128 teams. At the end of six preliminary seeding rounds in this field, 32 teams advanced into the double-octofinal elimination bracket. Of those 32, four of them were Fairmont Prep teams: The team of Savdharia and Savdharia placed ninth, Singh and Palmer notched 12th, Ismail and Razzak placed 13th, and Alamy and Bobrownicki took 25th.

In Congressional Debate, there were 69 competitors, eight of whom were freshmen from Fairmont Prep. Thirty of the 69 debaters advanced to the semifinal Congress chamber. After a contentious semifinal debate, three Fairmont Prep students advanced to the final Congress chamber of the tournament, which comprised 15 of the best Congress debaters at Long Beach. When the results of that debate came in, Natalie Bui took home fourth place overall, Sophia Lander placed sixth, and Ishaan Vaswani captured 10th! A hearty congratulations to all Huskies who competed --- you all did an excellent job!
