Jonathan Dunn has been a certified educational planner for the past ten years, but if you’re anything like me you might be scratching your head on what precisely that credential means? Basically, a certified educational planner is a rigorous credential for college counselors. In fact, only about 300 people have this certification because it is so challenging to obtain. So Fairmont Private Schools is extremely lucky to have a certified education planner available to our students.
In order to keep his credential up to date, Jonathan had to pass a 5-6 hour long exam and is required to visit a minimum of 75 colleges every five years and attend conferences. Therefore, Jonathan has visited a lot of college campuses. This means that when Jonathan is advising a student on which colleges would be fit their needs, he has first-hand knowledge of what the campus looks like, the student life, the programs offered, etc. Jonathan is an expert on “getting a finger on the pulse of a school” and being able to work with high school students to steer them in a direction that will make them successful academically, emotionally, and socially.
Jonathan wants to debunk the common misconception that “parents think [he] is here to get their child into a ‘good college.’” His purpose is “to find a school where a student will be well-served.” This means that he has to look past rankings. Jonathan believes that “every college has a personality and a soul of its own. Which is why [he] gets upset when people look solely at rankings because it has nothing to do with the quality of the education that the student receives.”
Even with all of the wisdom that Jonathan shared with us this final line really hit home, “it’s not where you go to college, it’s what you do when you get there.” -Jonathan Dunn
