As school winds down for the year, with seniors eager to graduate, the spring sports teams have officially concluded.
The Varsity Boys’ Volleyball Team had an excellent inaugural season. The boys were outstanding in league play and even qualified for the CIF playoffs, an amazing accomplishment for only a first year program. While they were unfortunately eliminated in the first round, this season marked a great foundational year for the program to build on. The team also participated in numerous games outside of league play such as their season opening tournament and a variety of competitions including a series against Avalon in Catalina.
The Boys’ Tennis Team gained some new players this season to add to the sizable roster of returning players; however, moving to a new, more challenging league proved to be difficult. Although they only won the first match against their arch rival, TVT, playing these harder opponents only made each member on the team stronger, where they could learn from their mistakes and improve their game. One of the best opponents was Sage Hill, which swept against Fairmont the first time 18-0. But the second time, Andrew Pan was able to win 1 set, triggering the player he was facing to become angry and throw his racquet at the fence multiple times. With this experience, Andrew advises his fellow teammates that “Tennis is about trying your best and not getting upset when you miss the ball or make a mistake. It’s about how you recover from that situation that makes all the difference.”
